A Sydney builder has been refused bail on a charge of murder over the death of a teenager who was punched in King's Cross on New Year's Eve.

The ABC reports Shaun McNeil, 25, was at Central Local Court on Tuesday morning but remained in the cells as his case was heard.

Daniel Christie, 18, died in hospital on Saturday. He had been in a critical condition for 11 days before his family made the decision to turn off his life support.

Mr McNeil is accused of felling Mr Christie with a single punch in an unprovoked attack.

He is also charged with assaulting four other young men, including Mr Christie's brother, Peter Christie.

The accused could face life in prison. He did not apply for bail and it was formally refused.
