Rise in China corruption charges

1:25 pm on 7 January 2014

There has been a dramatic increase in the number of Chinese executives being charged with corruption.

Private companies are being hit harder than the public sector, the ABC reports.

Over the past year the vast majority of Chinese executives facing court over fraud, bribery and other scams have come from the private sector.

The Chinese Entrepreneurs Crime Report 2013 released on Monday paints a picture of a vast crackdown on corruption in the country.

The report from a leading research centre and Beijing Normal University shows executive criminal cases increased by 80% in 2013.

Recent cases include 128 executives from state-owned companies and 469 private entrepreneurs.

Two hundred and twenty executives were jailed - 14 for life - and 10 were given the death penalty.
