A government panel says at least 34 children have died in relief camps set up for people who fled their homes after riots between Muslims and Hindus in India earlier this year.
The fighting took place in Uttar Pradesh in September.
State officials have denied reports that most of the children died of cold. They say the children died of pneumonia and dysentery, among other ailments.
The report also said that 4783 people were still living in five relief camps in Muzaffarnagar and Shamli districts.
The BBC reports 65 people died in the clashes in September and at least 85 people were injured. The trouble began after the killings of three men who had objected to the harassment of a young woman.
