The state government in Victoria is to award a medal to 4470 fire fighters for their work during the Black Saturday bushfires in 2009.

AAP reports the National Emergency Medal honours people who served their community during emergencies.

"These CFA members worked bravely to protect communities during the worst bushfires in Australian history and are well deserving of this recognition," said Emergency Services Minister Kim Wells.

The fires of 2009 took 173 lives and destroyed thousands of homes.

Earlier this year, 224 Victorian SES members were presented with National Emergency Medals in recognition of their service during the 2009 Victorian bushfires.
