Australian police say that a 23-year-old New Zealand man is using Facebook to contact more than 300 girls living on the north coast of New South Wales.

The ABC reports the man used fake photos to lure the girls, requesting their photos and arranging meetings.

Inspector Darren Steele, of Byron Bay, says the man set up his account while visiting the area, and has been using fake photos to lure the girls, requesting their photos and arranging meetings.

The man is now back in New Zealand and New South Wales police are working with the New Zealand child protection unit and Australian Federal Police on what crimes he may have committed.

Police are urging teenage girls to come forward if they've had social media contact with the man, who they say is wanted for sex offences.

Police had been delivering lectures on cyber bullying and harassment to school groups when they were approached by the teenage girls who gave police the Facebook page of the man they are now investigating.
