The Australian Navy rescued 90 asylum seekers from a boat taking on water northeast of Christmas Island on Friday.

AAP reports two navy vessels were sent to their aid following distress calls.

In a statement, the Australian Customs and Border Protection Service said HMAS Armidale and HMAS Parramatta picked up them up.

Initial reports were that 90 passengers and four crew were aboard the vessel. They were to be tranferred to Christmas Island for health and security checks.

None of the new arrivals will be allowed to settle in Australia under the federal government's new asylum seeker policy.
