A giant saltwater crocodile has been captured in north Queensland.

The 4.5 metre reptile has been terrorising fisherman on the Herbert River at Halifax, about an hour north of Townsville.

It weighs between 300kg - 400kg and is the biggest caught in Queensland this year.

"He's a metre wide, he's got a huge tail,'' said senior ranger Mike Reynolds. "He's got so much power it's unbelievable."

The ABC reports the crocodile has been wandering the waters of the Herbert River for months and has been harassing people so successfully he has earned a nickname.

"We've called him Bully because he's been bossing people around at boat ramps and stuff , so we thought we'd call him that," said ranger Bruce Reese.

Bully is being moved to a new home in Townsville.
