Rights for transgender students now law in California

California is the first state in the USA to enshrine rights for transgender students.

A new law requires public schools and kindergartens to allow pupils to use boys or girls toilets according to their preference.

The legislation also allows transgender schoolchildren to choose whether to play boys or girls sports.

Massachusetts and Connecticut have policies granting the same protections, but California is the first state to put them into law.
