Gunmen in Nigeria killed at least 44 people at a mosque in Borno state in the northeast of the country on Sunday morning.

The killings took place during dawn prayers in the town of Konduga, 35km from the state capital, Maiduguri.

The BBC reports the Boko Haram group is suspected.

Twelve more civilians were reportedly killed at Ngom village, closer to Maiduguri, also.

Word of the killings emerged on Monday, as communications are disrupted by a state of emergency.
