US embassies in begin to reopen

6:29 pm on 12 August 2013

United States embassies closed a week ago over fears of an al Qaeda attack have begun to re-open.

American embassies and consulates in Libya, Abu Dhabi and Dubai are open again after the US closed 19 of its diplomatic posts throughout the Middle East and Africa, the ABC reports.

Communications intercepts had indicated a terrorist threat that US politicians called "the most serious in years".

It reportedly included an attack order from the al Qaeda leader, Ayman al-Zawahiri, to the Yemen-based group known as al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula.

The US State Department says its mission in Yemen will remain closed.
