Peru has confirmed that an pyramid at the oldest archaeological site in the country, has been destroyed.

The BBC reports two real-estate companies are blamed for tearing down the structure, which was 6m high.

It was one of 12 pyramids found at the El Paraiso complex, close to the capital Lima, and was thought to be at least 4000 years old.

According to the ministry of tourism, it was a religious and administrative centre long before the pre-Columbian Inca civilisation.
