The two largest trade unions in Greece have called a 24-hour general strike over the abrupt closure of state run radio and televison.
The government took the state broadcaster off the air in the middle of the night, hours after the decision was announced on Tuesday.
Screens went black on Hellenic Broadcasting Corporation ERT, cutting newscasters off mid-sentence, the ABC reports.
A government spokesperson says the waste at the television and radio station was a scandal and it was being closed as a temporary measure before its relaunch in a smaller form later in the year.
ERT journalists were trying to use analogue channels and web-streaming to continue programming.
Unions called a 24-hour strike in response and journalists across all media called an indefinite strike.
Some private media channels were showing solidarity by re-running soap operas and sitcoms instead of news.
