Another US tax official to leave in wake of scandal

A second senior tax official in the United States is leaving his job in the wake of the scandal over the unfair targeting of right-wing groups for special scrutiny.

The first to go was the head of the Internal Revenue Service, Steve Miller, who was forced out on Wednesday.

His temporary replacement has been named as David Wurfel.

In a statement, President Barack Obama said Mr Wurfel had the experience and management ability necessary to lead the agency in "this important time".

Mr Wurfel assumes temporary leadership of a government department in crisis, the BBC reports.

Last week, the IRS publicly apologised for targeting conservative political groups for additional and sometimes burdensome scrutiny when they applied for tax exempt status.

Meanwhile, Joseph Grant, who headed the division whose agents carried out the targeting, announced that he intends to retire in June.
