South Korea to withdraw workers from joint industrial zone

8:00 pm on 27 April 2013

South Korea is pulling out all its remaining workers from the Kaesong joint industrial zone in North Korea after the North rejected an offer of talks to reopen it.

Work at the jointly-run complex has been suspended since the North blocked access earlier this month and withdrew its 50,000 workers.

The move followed weeks of high tension in the wake of North Korea's third nuclear test in February.

A total of 175 South Korean workers are currently in the complex, which is home to South Korean factories staffed by North Korean workers, the BBC reports.

The remaining South Koreans were believed to be running out of food and medicines, because the North had refused to allow in fresh supplies.
