French troops begin withdrawal from Mali

France has begun its first withdrawal of soldiers from Mali.

About 100 troops who were fighting insurgents in the north of the country have been sent to Cyprus, before they head home.

In January France sent about 4000 soldiers to Mali to stop Islamists advancing on the capital, Bamako.

The aim is for a regional West African force to take over in the coming weeks, the BBC reports.
