Congo general in ICC custody

Congolese war crimes suspect Bosco Ntaganda has been transferred to the custody of the International Criminal Court in The Hague.

The renegade general handed himself in to the United States embassy in the Rwandan capital Kigali earlier this week.

In a career spanning more than two decades, Bosco Ntaganda, known as "The Terminator" has fought for the armies of Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, as well as at least two rebel movements, the BBC reports.

Most recently, he was believed to be one of the leaders of the M23 rebel movement, which has been fighting government troops in east Congo.

He is accused of seven counts of war crimes and three counts of crimes against humanity allegedly committed in Ituri, DR Congo, between 2002 and 2003. The charges include enlisting child soldiers, murder, rape and sexual slavery.

The US State Department said it was as surprised as anyone when the fugitive general appeared at the gates of the embassy on Monday.

America's top official for Africa Johnnie Carson said that his surrender was an opportunity to "advance a little bit of peace and stability in the eastern Congo".
