Quake shakes Tokyo

9:39 pm on 25 February 2013

A powerful earthquake has shaken Tokyo, wobbling high rise buildings in the Japanese capital for 30 seconds.

The US Geological Survey reports the magnitude 5.7 quake had a depth of 9 kilometres.

The ABC reports that in the capital, high-rise buildings shook for more than half a minute.

The shallow quake was felt over a 500-kilometre range of Japan's main island of Honshu - from Akita in the north to Shizuoka in the south.

Nuclear plants in the affected area have reported no problems, while bullet trains are running again after a short suspension.

Japan's meteorological agency said no tsunami warning had been issued.
