Indonesian island to crack down on dodgy alcohol

The death of an Australian tourist from methanol poisoning has prompted Indonesian authorities to crack down on the unlicensed sale of alcohol.

Liam Davies, who lived in Perth, died in early January after drinking with friends in Indonesia.

The 19-year-old New Zealand-born man had been celebrating the new year and died after drinking cocktails at a bar on Lombok Island near Bali.

The North Lombok tourism office is threatening to revoke the business licences of any outlet found to be selling unregistered alcohol, the ABC reports.

Spokesperson Fahman Toriki says they are concerned that tourists will stop coming to the popular holiday area unless they clean up the alcohol industry.

Mr Toriki says they have told all hotels on nearby Gili Trawangan Island that they are not allowed to sell home-made alcohol.

A campaign has also begun to warn tourists against drinking unregistered drinks, he says.
