Military checkpoint attacked by Pakistan Taliban

9:58 am on 3 February 2013

Thirteen soldiers and 10 civilians died in an attack by the Pakistan Taliban on a checkpoint in northwest Pakistan.

The raid took place in the town of Serai Naurang in north-west Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province early on Saturday. Fighting lasted several hours.

At least eight soldiers were wounded and 12 Taliban were killed. Officials said some of them were suicide bombers.

The BBC reports the dead civilians, including three women and three children, were in a house nearby.

The Pakistan Taliban said the attack was in response to the death of two commanders in a drone strike last month.
