Empty houses abound in Spain

8:02 am on 3 February 2013

Spain's property boom and bust has left the country with a record number of empty houses - maybe as many as a million.

And a record number of people, an estimated 350,000 in five years, are unable to pay their mortgages. Their homes have been repossessed.

There was a national outcry when a woman in the Basque Country jumped from her balcony and died, just as officials arrived to evict her.

Record numbers of people are unable to gain access to their properties after the banks locked them out.

Now locksmiths in the region of Navarra are taking a stand and are boycotting this business. However, the BBC reports this is not being followed in other regions.
