The former president of Pakistan says he intends to return soon to revive his political career and help his party contest elections in May.

General Pervez Musharraf, who came to power in a 1999 coup, has lived in self-imposed exile in London since he stepped down as president in 2008, the BBC reports.

He believes Pakistan's army, which he once led, can help guarantee democracy in his country.

"Army has a role to bring about sustainable democracy. Today the demand of the day is bring an absolutely impartial caretaker government. The army has a role to ensure that."

Mr Musharraf is wanted in Pakistan in connection with the killing of former prime minister Benezir Bhutto.

He denies any wrongdoing.
