Bagana is near the centre of Bougainville Island, a, autonomous province in Papua New Guinea.
The nearby town of Arawa reportedly has a thin covering of volcanic ash from the eruption.
Radio New Zealand International reports Bagana has had a series of small eruptions in the last couple of months.
