Asylum seeker boat intercepted

5:37 am on 15 November 2012

A boat carrying 87 suspected asylum seekers has been intercepted by Australia near the Cocos (Keeling) Islands.

Customs boat Triton intercepted the vessel on Tuesday.

AAP reports those on board the boat were transferred to the Cocos Islands for basic health and security checks. They will be transferred to Christmas Island for further checks.

Under new offshore processing arrangements, people arriving in Australian waters since 13 August by boat without a visa risk being transferred to Nauru or Manus Island in PNG.
