The Australian Senate on Monday has paid tribute to Corporal Scott Smith, who was killed in Afghanistan last week.

Corporal Smith, 24, was the seventh Australian soldier to die in Afghanistan so far this year and the 39th since 2001.

Senators stood for a minute's silence honouring his service to Australia after parliament began sitting on Monday.

Senator Chris Evans said the chamber expressed its deepest sorrow and tendered its sympathy to the soldier's family, friends and colleagues.

Corporal Smith was killed by an improvised explosive device as he searched a compound during an operation in southern Afghanistan on 21 October.
