Arms lobbying report to be investigated

12:56 pm on 14 October 2012

The Ministry of Defence in Britain is to investigate a report that retired military officials offered to influence MPs and civil servants on behalf of arms firms.

They were secretly filmed during an investigation by the Sunday Times newspaper, which said they were in breach of Whitehall rules on lobbying.

The paper set up a fictitious lobbying company to see if the retired officers would act as "generals for hire".

The paper said all the officers involved have denied any wrongdoing.

Responding to the report, Defence Secretary Philip Hammond told the BBC that former military officers wield no influence on how the Ministry of Defence spent its money.
