Egyptian army kills over 30 in Sinai

Egypt says its armed forces have killed 32 people described as "criminal elements" since launching a big security operation last month in the Sinai Peninsula.

The troops went into Sinai after 16 soldiers were killed by militants a month ago, the BBC reports.

A military spokesperson says 31 tunnels between Sinai and the Gaza Strip were also uncovered and destroyed.

A military spokesperson says the operation did not violate the peace treaty with Israel under which parts of Sinai are demilitarised.
