Typhoon toll revealed by North Korea

State media in North Korea say a typhoon that struck the country last week is now known to have killed 48 people and left more than 20,000 homeless.

The KCNA official news agency said Typhoon Bolaven damaged at least 50,000 hectares of farmland, flooded houses and destroyed numerous schools and clinics.

Typhoon Bolaven travelled up the western side of the Korean peninsula.

In August, North Korea asked the United Nations for aid after floods in June and July caused by a previous typhoon killed 169 people. Another 212,000 people were made homeless.
