Asylum seekers on hunger strike

5:12 am on 27 August 2012

A number of asylum seekers on Christmas Island are on a hunger strike to protest against being transferred to Nauru.

The Department of Immigration has confirmed a number are refusing to eat.

The Lower House of Parliament and the Senate last week passed legislation which will allow offshore processing in Nauru and Papua New Guinea for asylum seekers who come by boat.

Anyone who arrived after August 13, could be sent to either Nauru or Manus Island.

The ABC reports it's not clear how many people are refusing food.

The Government is yet to announce a date for the first transfers.
