Myanmar to end media censorship

8:41 pm on 20 August 2012

The government in Myanmar says it is abolishing media censorship.

The Information Ministry has announced on its website that censorship of all local publications will cease.

Many publications had already been freed from the scrutiny of the censors, but from Monday political and religious journals will join them, the ABC reports.

The move is part of the wider process of reform in Myanmar, which until recently was ruled by a hard-line military junta.
