General killed after Friday prayers

12:35 pm on 11 August 2012

Gunmen in Libya have shot and killed a defence official in the eastern city of Benghazi.

General Mohammed Hadiya Al-Feitouri, was leaving a mosque after Friday prayers when he was hit by bullets fired from a car.

General Hadia was one of the first military officers to defect from Colonel Muammar Gaddafi's regime during last year's revolt.

He was the defence ministry official responsible for ammunition and weapons.

Benghazi has seen a spate of killings in recent months of security officials who served under Colonel Gaddafi.

Last week, a former senior military intelligence officer, Colonel Suleiman Bouzrida, was killed while walking to a mosque.

A BBC correspondent says the motives behind the killing remain unclear.
