Manila flood toll now 60

The Philippine government disaster agency says at least 60 people are known to have died in the capital Manila and surrounding areas after days of torrential rain.

The rains started on Monday after Typhoon Saola hit the main island of Luzon late last month.

More than half of the capital, Manila, was submerged at the peak of the floods. Some parts of the city are still inaccessible.

The BBC reports the floods were the worst to hit Manila since Tropical Storm Ketsana killed 464 people in 2009.

The rainfall has been so intense that rice fields were turned into an inland ocean of brown water.
