US massacre suspect was under psychiatrist's care

Court papers just released in the United States show the man accused of killing 12 people and wounding 58 others in a shooting rampage at a Denver cinema was under the care of a psychiatrist.

The information is in a filing to the Arapahoe County District Court from defence lawyers for James Holmes, the 24-year-old former graduate student who the police say opened fire during a screening of the Batman movie The Dark Knight Rises.

The attorneys are seeking the contents of a package he sent to Doctor Lynne Fenton.

The filing says James Holmes was a psychiatric patient of Dr Fenton, and that his communications with her are protected.

Dr Fenton, medical director for student mental health services of the University of Colorado-Denver Anschutz Medical Campus, provides medication and psychotherapy for graduate students in addition to her teaching responsibilities, according to a school website.
