Inquiry into hospital cleaners treating patients

5:19 pm on 11 July 2012

An inquiry has been ordered in India following reports that cleaners and ward assistants are treating patients at a government hospital.

Images have been broadcast on television showing that a man stitching wounds in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh was actually a cleaner, the BBC reports.

A ward attendant said to be employed mostly for janitorial work was administering injections.

The state health minister says the men were actually operating theatre attendants, but has ordered a probe into the matter.
