South Sudan is celebrating the first anniversary of its declaration of independence.
It broke away from Sudan following decades of civil war in which at least two million people died.
But the BBC reports the first year has not been easy with ethnic conflict in Jonglei State killing hundreds, conflict on the border with Sudan and a huge corruption scandal.
Government revenues have collapsed and austerity measures have been imposed.
Official celebrations in the capital, Juba, saw a military parade, featuring tanks and rocket launchers. Two helicopter flew South Sudan's flag over the heads of the cheering crowds.
We still depend on others,'' President Salva Kiir said.
''Our liberty today is incomplete. We must be more than liberated. We have to be independent economically."
