Provisional Met Office figures in Britain show last month was the wettest June there since records began in 1910.

April this year was also the rainiest on record and the period from April - June was also the wettest recorded for Britain.

The BBC reports total rainfall in June was 145.3mm - more than twice as much as normally expected.

Wales and Northern Ireland had their wettest June on record, England experienced the second wettest and Scotland the eighth wettest.

Race-goers at Ascot were drenched, the Olympic torch was doused and festival-goers on the Isle of Wight were mired in mud.
