A woman who organised a ring for kidnapping and selling 223 babies has been sentenced to death by a court in China.

Xinhua news agency reported Jiang Kaizhi, 51, was sentenced on Friday. She was arrested in January 2011.

Another 35 people, aged between 20 and 65, received prison sentences ranging from three years to life for abduction, transportation and trafficking of infants.

The court found that they had conspired to kidnap babies in Yunnan province and then sell them in Henan province.

The group earned about 30,000 yuan per boy and 20,000 yuan per girl.

The trafficking occurred from late 2009 through August 2010.
