Questions over damage to Trevi Fountain

8:11 am on 17 June 2012

Pieces of the Trevi Fountain in Rome crumbled away this week. Experts say the damage was the result of a particularly harsh winter.

Deutsche Welle Radio reports that critics are asking why more is not being done to protect the fountain and other monuments in Italy, and not just from weather damage.

Vandals have also damaged the monument by hacking pieces from the sculptures of the elaborate monument.

Current preservation policies are seen as benign neglect.

Italians say the government wants to have its cake and eat it, too.
