Clashes cause disruption at Libyan airport

2:21 pm on 5 June 2012

Libya's interim government says authorities have regained control of the international airport in Tripoli after militia fighters brought it to a standstill for much of the day.

Members of the al-Awfea Brigade occupied the airport for several hours demanding the release of their leader, who they said was being held by Tripoli's security forces.

Gunfire was heard when troops and other militias entered the airport to oust the brigade, the BBC reports.

Libya's deputy interior minister Omar Khadrawi told journalists in Tripoli that a hangar had been blown up and a field set alight but authorities had regained control over the airport.
