Aftershocks shake Italy

10:07 pm on 24 May 2012

Two new strong aftershocks have rattled northeast Italy, sending people outdoors and further damaging buildings hit by a weekend earthquake.

The first aftershock measured 4.3 and the second 3.2.

Sunday's quake killed six people and left thousands homeless.

The makeshift dwellings set up in the aftermath of the weekend quake are completely filled and entire families camped the night in their cars following the aftershocks.

The Italian government has declared a 60-day state of emergency in the region hit by the quake and promised 50 million euros in aid to help rebuild houses and family-owned factories.
