Fiji begins to recover from flooding

6:12 pm on 5 April 2012

The director of Fiji's Disaster Management Office says power and water have been restored to more than half of the people whose supply was cut by flooding.

Pajiliai Dobui says the number of people in evacuation centres on the main island of Viti Levu has dropped from 14,000 to between 7,000 and 8,000.

He says the Rewa delta area in eastern Viti Levu is still submerged but flood waters have completely receded in the Western Division.

Pajiliai Dobui says Nadi and Sigatoka are the areas where flooding has caused the most damage.
