Niger food crisis burgeoning into catastrophe

Aid agency Save the Children says the worsening food crisis in Niger could turn into a catastrophe unless millions of dollars worth of extra funding is secured.

It says about six million people in Niger are already in desperate need of assistance because of crop failure and a sharp rise in staple food prices.

Chief executive Justin Forsyth, who has just returned from Niger, says he has seen severely malnourished children and families cutting out entire meals.

He says the clock is ticking and a quick donor response is required to save lives.
