Indonesian counter-terrorism forces say they have shot five people suspected of planning attacks in Bali.

Police have confirmed officers from the country's crack anti-terror unit Detachment 88 shot five people in raids carried out on at least two addresses in Denpasar and Sanur, AAP reports.

Sanur, in particular, is an area popular among foreign tourists.

The raids come as Balinese prepare to celebrate the Hindu New Year.
