American Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum has won two Deep South states in the race to decide who runs against Barack Obama for the United States presidency later this year.

With 96% of the votes counted, Rick Santorum led with 33% of the vote in Mississippi. Newt Gingrich was second with 31%, followed closely by Mitt Romney at 30%.

Mr Santorum, a former Pennsylvania senator, earlier won the Republican primary in Alabama with 35% of the vote. Newt Gingrich had 30% and Mitt Romney 28%.

Mr Santorum is hoping to push Mr Gingrich out and run directly against Mr Romney, who leads the overall delegate race.
