Govt agrees to speed up Treaty settlement laws

7:17 pm on 16 February 2012

The Government has taken on board a Ministry of Justice recommendation to increase the rate of Treaty settlement legislation through Parliament.

The recommendation was part of a ministry briefing earlier this month to Treaty of Waitangi Negotiations Minister Chris Finlayson.

He says Parliament's Business Committee has agreed to extend Thursday's sitting hours in the House and for Parliament to sit Friday morning.

Mr Finlayson says that will allow the first reading of claims settlement bills for Ngai Tamanuhiri from the Gisborne region and Ngati Makino in Bay of Plenty.

He says second readings will take place for bills which relate to Ngati Whare, Ngati Manawa, Ngati Porou, Ngati Maniapoto and Ngati Pahauwera.

Mr Finlayson says the Government is committed to increasing the momentum of Treaty settlements.
