Taranaki tribes waiting to make their claims relating to Mt Taranaki will have to wait until four iwi in the region sign their Treaty settlements with the Crown.
Nga Hapu o Ngaruahine Iwi Incorporated chair Daisy Noble says her iwi is one of four tribes in negotiation with the Crown - the others being Taranaki Tuturu; Te Atiawa and Ngati Maru.
She says, since Ngati Ruanui settled with the Crown in 2003, the government has made it clear that Mt Taranaki won't be settled until all eight tribes have completed their settlements individually.
Ms Noble says, if all four iwi settle within the next two to three years, all eight Taranaki iwi will have completed their Treaty settlements - and they can move on to their claims over the maunga or mountain.
She says it means Taranaki as a whole can then move forward with their collective claim over Mt Taranaki.
