Green MP to be standard bearer fro Treaty of Waitangi

8:48 pm on 16 December 2011

The Green Party's Treaty of Waitangi spokesperson is promising to be a champion for the treaty during her next three years as an MP.

Catherine Delahunty keeps the party's treaty portfolio, which she has held since 2008.

She says more work needs to be done so people respect, use and acknowledge Aotearoa's founding document.

There also needs to be a increase in education so people know the treaty is for everyone.

Ms Delahunty says there have been occasions when she's heard people talk about the treaty as if it was just an issue for Maori rather than all New Zealanders.

The country can't continue to allow many young Maori to feel they are not respected and that there is no place for them, she says.
