Maori electorates go for Greens

9:53 pm on 28 November 2011

The Green Party says the votes it has attracted from Maori electorates have doubled, compared with the 2008 ballot.

It says the figures show its vision for Aotearoa is in line with the wants and needs of tangata whenua.

The Green Party seized 10.7% of the nationwide party vote at the election on Saturday, increasing its MPs in Parliament from nine to 13.

Although it did not win Te Tai Tonga, the share of its party vote leapt from 7.2% to 15.5%.

Greens co-leader Metiria Turei says the surge in votes from Maori is heartening.
