A Bay of Plenty kiwifruit industry leader says Maori businesses need to be clipping the ticket all the way along the production and marketing chain, instead of allowing others to do so.
Hemi Rolleston heads Te Awanaui Huka Pak at Mount Maunganui, which owns orchards, packhouses and coolstores in the region.
He says Maori businesses are a big part of New Zealand's export food bowl, but in many cases their interest stops at the gate of the farm, orchard or forest.
Mr Rolleston says there's a need for more of them to be fully integrated and involved in the production, processing and marketing of food.
