New dairy company doing well

Owners of Miraka Ltd, say initial production has been well ahead of budget.

The milk processing facility at Mokai, northwest of Taupo, is a joint venture between Tuaropaki Kaitiaki and Wairarapa Moana Corporation. It is the first Maori-controlled dairy company in New Zealand.

Chief executive Richard Wyeth is delighted at how the new plant has been operating since it opened in late July.

He says rain in both August and early September boosted the intake of milk.

At this stage the company has about 50 farmers supplying the plant, and it's about to start a recruitment campaign to boost numbers.

Mr Wyeth says several farmers who showed an interest in supplying milk to the plant in 2010 but decided to wait and see how it performed now want to sign up.
