Corrections finalist for Maori language award

7:25 pm on 4 October 2011

The Department of Corrections is in the running to win a Maori Language Award.

It's been named a finalist in the Government category for excellence in te reo Maori in the awards, which are organised by the Maori Language Commission.

Corrections' head of Maori Neil Campbell says he's working to embed te reo and tikanga Maori at all levels of the organisation so they become a natural part of prisons' kawa, or protocol.

He says, with Maori making up over half the prison population, Corrections is helping contribute to the regeneration of te reo Maori.

The winner of the Maori Language Awards will be announced on Friday 18 November.

The competition is organised by the Maori Language Commission.
